My first backpacking tent was a MARMOT Crane Creek 2P. I avoid extra weight, so I skip the footprint, though you can buy an inexpensive one or just use a basic tarp if you prefer. I take this tent when I expect rocky ground because it’s free‑standing and doesn’t have to be secured with stakes. It weighs a little over 5 lbs, and I’ve even shared it with a 6'4" buddy without issue.

My current tent is a trekking‑pole shelter: the StratoSpire 1 by Tarptent, which I bought from Garage Grown Gear. It needed some seam sealing and, of course, trekking poles. I picked up a two‑pair pack of poles from Costco and they’ve worked great.

When I’m in areas with trees I usually hammock‑camp using the Bear Butt 2‑Person Hammock with heavy‑duty straps. Don’t forget an underquilt! Your backside will thank you.
