Shelters

My first backpacking tent was a MARMOT Crane Creek 2P. I avoid extra weight, so I skip the footprint, though you can buy an inexpensive one or just use a basic tarp if you prefer. I take this tent when I expect rocky ground because it’s free‑standing and doesn’t have to be secured with stakes. It weighs a little over 5 lbs, and I’ve even shared it with a 6'4" buddy without issue. It is a great starter tent.
My current tent is a trekking‑pole shelter: the StratoSpire 1 by Tarptent, which I bought from Garage Grown Gear. It needed some seam sealing and, of course, trekking poles. I picked up a two‑pair pack of poles from Costco and they’ve worked great.
When I’m in areas with trees I usually hammock‑camp using the Bear Butt 2‑Person Hammock with required heavy‑duty straps. Don’t forget an underquilt like mine from OneTigris! Your backside will thank you. If there’s rain in the forecast, I use the Bear Butt Hammock Rain Fly & Camping Tarp.
I don’t use a footprint, but my friend uses a Tyvek Ground Sheet. It’s durable, lightweight, and a great conversation piece.
